A beautiful waterfront regatta in a stunning state park; the RS Tera North American Championship 2023 will be hosted by Sail Park City, in Utah this weekend. This is the first time the championship will be hosted outside of the West Coast and is a celebration of the RS Tera Class in the mountain region. The pioneering growth has seen over 50 RS Teras join the sport, particularly in Utah and Colorado, and the likes of Park City Sailing Association and Community Sailing of Colorado have found a great fit for the boat in their programs.

The Championship will be sailed out of the Lake View Center which looks out over the water and dam in Jordanelle State Park. Expect classic lake sailing conditions with patterned light breezes and sweeping stretches across the lake that are funnelled down from the majestic surrounding mountains. Lake View Center is right on the beach, which provides a scenic spot for RS Tera sailors for rigging and derigging.

Competitors arrive today, Friday 8th September, and can squeeze in a few practice races between 2pm-5pm. Registrants are coming from all corners of the country including some sailors from California who have just returned for the RS Tera World Championships in Italy. Based on qualifications, sailors will be placed in the Silver Sport, Gold or Pro classes. After the official check-in and meeting the 9th, racing will commence across both Saturday and Sunday, and the weekend will round-off with the Awards Ceremony.

Making the most of summer, sailors and their families will be parking up in their RVs, pitching a tent or renting a cabin – so expect plenty a new friendship to be formed around the campfire. There will be debriefing both days after racing for everyone to congregate and an ice cream social on Saturday evening too, yum!

As the venue is in the state park, the event is doing everything it can to comply with environmental guidelines. One key notice is that sailors are encouraged to bring their own re-usable water bottles. A water spigot will be available for refills both onshore and on the water – helping to reduce plastic waste. Carpooling has also been encouraged alongside options to charter the RS Teras to help reduce travel emissions.

Good luck to all boats participating and we can’t wait to celebrate in a new region! With over 250 RS Tera, the West Coast has been the epicenter of previous North American Championships, so lake and reservoir sailing is a fun new playground to challenge the championship. You can find more information on the entry list here, the results (when made available after racing), as well as the Notice of Race.
