Magic Marine RS Tera Inland Championships
Sixty Nine helms entered the Magic Marine RS Tera Inland Championships at Oxford Sailing Club over the weekend of 20th and 21st June for the second event towards qualification for winter training squads.
Saturday morning saw rain with little to no wind, forcing PRO Richard Hall to hold the fleet ashore until a light shifty breeze filled in across the reservoir; this was going to be a very challenging day for everyone involved.
Race one for both fleets started in light breeze building towards the end of the race with Henry Rastrick from Ripon SC taking the win in the PRO fleet from Andrew Frost of Sutton Bingham holding off a charging Harrison Pye of Draycote Water.
The Sports fleet sailing a slightly shorter Inner loop course was lead home by Ralph Neville of Frensham Pond SC, followed by Roscoe Martin of Ogston and Jamie Rastrick of Ripon in third.
Race two saw the breeze fluctuating between 10 and 20 knots, added to this the sight of lightening in the far distance, which was being closely monitored by the Safety team, really tested everyone.
In the PRO fleet Ana Patterson of Ripon SC took line honours followed home by Henry, then Harry Jones of Draycote in third, the SPORT fleet saw Matt Taylor of Alton Water lead Alec Cope of the Isle of Man YC and Freddy Wood of Hayling Island SC to the line.
In race three thunder could be heard and the skies went very dark, however the monitoring of the weather was great and everyone kept safe, the PROS saw local sailor Charlotte Ormerod lead the fleet home followed closely by Henry, then Ben Batchelor of the isle of Man in third.
Race four was silent, the thunder and lightening stopped and the breeze started to fade, the PRO fleet managed to make it round the course seeing another different winner in Dylan Collingbourne of Burnham Sc taking line honours, followed home by Harrison then Ana.
The SPORTS race was curtailed by a 90 degree shift and the breeze completely shut off leaving no choice for the PRO but to abandon the race.
Overnight in the PRO it was Henry, then Harrison and Ana, in the SPORTS Roscoe, then Matt, the Jamie.
Sunday was warmer, still not much sunshine but a decent breeze, though very shifty and patchy.
Race five for the PRO’s was won by Henry, followed very closely by Andrew then Ana, race six was taken by Ossian Bracegirdle of Hayling Island SC, then Andrew and Henry Collison of Royal Lymington YC.
The SPORTS fourth race was won by Roscoe, then Matt and Hamish Morley of Hayling Island SC, and the fifth saw another race winner, Tom Storey of Ripon, then Jamie and Rupert Jameson of Hayling Island SC.
The last two races of the day saw the breeze settle and a more consistent 10 knots, in the PRO, Henry Collison became the sixth race winner from seven races, followed by Charlotte and Ossian, in the final showdown Charlotte took her second win of the weekend, with Ana second and Sophie Johnson of Blackwater SC third.
SPORT races six and seven were won by Roscoe and Robbie McDonald of Hayling Island SC respectively, with Jamie second and Ewan Wilson of Wormit BC third in race six, and Roscoe second and Matt third in race seven.
When all the results were crunched it emerged that the Class Inland Champions for 2015 are Ana Patterson in the PRO and Roscoe Martin in the SPORT.
The Dawn Bissett trophy, nominated by the race team was awarded to Fergus Pye of Draycote Water for sportsmanship.
The Club trophy was awarded for the first time to Ripon SC.
A big thank you to everyone involved in organising and managing yet another great RS Tera event, and to class sponsor Magic Marine for all the fantastic prizes.
Next Championships for the RS Tera fleet are the World Championship at Bruinisse in Holland at the end of July, then the National Championships at Weymouth at the end of August.
